Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was started when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey and P. T. Barnum was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus. The Ringling brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the circuses separately until they were finally merged in 1919.Currently, the circus maintains two circus train-based shows, the Blue Tour and the Red Tour, as well as the truck-based Gold Tour. Each train, the largest privately owned trains in the world, stretches a mile in length with roughly 60cars: 40passenger cars and 20freight. The Blue and Red Tours present a full three-ring production for two years each (taking the month of December off), visiting alternating major cities each year. Each train presents a different "edition" of the show, using a numbering scheme that dates back to circus origins in 1871. The Blue Tour presents the even-numbered editions (beginning each even-numbered year), and the Red Tour presents the odd-numbered editions (beginning each odd-numbered year). The Gold Tour presents a scaled-back, single-ring version of the show, designed to serve smaller markets deemed incapable of supporting the three-ring versions. For 2009 the Red show will debut the 139th edition, entitled "Zing, Zang, Zoom." It features large scale magic including a disappearing Elephant and numerous other illusions. However, the red show will no longer feature long-time star Bello Nock. Although both are credited for production of the show, the Red show is mainly under the control of Kenneth Feld while his wife Nicole controls the Blue show. The circus emphasizes that the utmost care is given to the animals' health and welfare. The circus believes that promoting human-animal interaction is vital to increasing public awareness of the need to protect and preserve animal species. They state "Captive animals play an important role as Ambassadors – teaching people about the animals’ needs and challenges and about our responsibility to ensure their future survival." The circus meets all requirements for zoos and circuses for animal welfare. In 1995, the circus opened the Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida for the breeding, research, and retirement of its Asian Elephant herd. All dogs in the shows are from animal shelters or rescued from poor living conditions. The circus participates in breeding programs for endangered species used in the shows including the Bengal tiger and elephant. The tiger population is retired to Big Cat Rescue. Many animal welfare and animal rights organizations are opposed to the use of wild animals in circuses. The latter groups also oppose the use of domestic animals, such as horses or dogs, in circuses. Many of these groups actively campaign against circuses by staging protests to promote their position and to urge circus-goers to boycott Ringling and other circuses and to patronize only animal-free circuses. The groups allege that animals used in the circus are subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment during training, harsh conditions during transport, and a general lack of mental and physical stimulation. The vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. We had the idea to present something different, to create a show that presented a wide spectrum of black talent to a wide demographic of spectators. To reach deep into our culture and search for what talent and skills lie asleep in the black entertainment experience. We wanted to apply our gathered years of experience in the live appearance industry, to make a difference, to change the industry we lived in, creating growth and new opportunity. Our journey began in libraries, first researching black entertainment from the turn of the century, until today. We came across a black circus operating in 1893. I envisioned hip-hop musicals, a return to vaudeville and animal acts. That's when the decision was made to create a full-blown big top circus. We had to find black circus performers. But where would we find them? How could we express our culture through circus arts? In what form or forum would the presentation take place? Well, as the saying goes, if you take the first step Providence moves in. All sorts of things happen in your favor. While walking through a Black Expo a few weeks later, the corner of my eye caught one particular booth. The sign said: OF BLACKS AND CIRCUS RINGS . I became so excited; I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This vendor had artifacts, pictures, videos and in-depth knowledge of African American contributions to the circus industry. He shared a wealth of knowledge and contacts with us. He led us to Prince BoJino, one of the first black lion tamers. He helped us organize training for all of our animal acts. He introduced us to legendary black performers who helped us pull it all together. The idea took on a life of its own with black circus performers. They were overwhelmed by the concept. They sent an international call to other black circus performers. Recruiting, training and production began in 1993. Three weeks before the opening, I paid a visit to the training facility. It was clear that the person we chose wasn't working out. After watching rehearsals all that flashed in my mind was possible the headlines: “FIRST BLACK CIRCUS. TIGER EATS TRAINER ON OPENING DAY.” So I fired the guy. I'm three weeks away from advertising this black lion tamer and I'm sitting in my office at 11 p.m. saying to myself, “Okay Cedric, you've really done it this time. Now you've got to go into the lion's cage.” I was attempting to convince myself that I could do it, when, thank you Jesus, I thought about my “crazy” cousin who lived with three 14 feet boa constrictors in his bedroom. I had a feeling he would be interested in the job. I called his home that night. By six the next morning, he had quit his job and was ready to join the circus. The first show lost every penny. But the idea was successful. Although Walker lined up backers and sponsors, few believed in his vision, so his own money financed the majority of the million-dollar production. UniverSoul had successfully turned the traditional, “pomp and circumstance” circus world upside down in 1994 when Walker's dream of “Hip Hop under the Big Top” turned into a reality in the parking lot of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Despite going deep into the red during the first season, enthusiastic crowds and rave reviews encouraged Walker and company to continue operations. By 1997 the circus tour had grown to 10 cities, 19 cities in 1999, 31 cities in 2000, toured South Africa 2001– its first international destination, and 32 cities in 2005. BUY TICKETS HERE!

In April of 2008 I started a website to help parents find wonderful things for the kids to do around New York City. I have 2 kids and would always put them in free sports leagues or take them to events that were free. Each time I would put my own children in something I wanted to share with other parents how much fun my own children would have. I began by listing events and activities that were free to low cost so parents could save money. The suggestion came from a fellow parent that works in my children’s school. After getting positive feedback from so many people I branched out beyond the five boroughs of New York to help parents across the country. Demands came into have a website for areas all over the United States. Kids On The Go has events Nationwide! I give you links and websites to different hometowns at its best. You will find the best parks, stores, professional services, restaurants, babysitters, places to stay, and entertainment, among other things. It's the answer to all those times you've wondered how to begin your search for afterschool activities, day camps, sports leagues, or a good day out. Ideas for Kids On The Go will be posted on what to do on a rainy Sunday, where to throw a party for an eight-year-old and how to find the best parades, fairs and festivals. For travelers who want an inside track on what's going on around town, Kids On The Go highlights the non-touristy attractions, child-friendly restaurants, and safe areas to play. I also suggest easy ways to get around town, family-friendly lodgings, and key contact information that will make your stay safer and more pleasant. U10 Boys Soccer Compete for National Title

Asphalt Green Finishes Second in the United States
Asphalt Green’s U10 Boys team already captured the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) Championships this spring. This summer they were busy pursuing a national title in futsal, a popular form of indoor soccer played with a smaller, less bouncy ball and lines marking the boundaries instead of walls. The name derives from futebol de salão, which is “indoor soccer” in Portuguese. On July 13, the U10 Boys made it to the finals of the 2008 U.S. Futsal National Championships in Baltimore, where they faced another CJSL team that they had beaten the day before to finish first place in their group with an undefeated record. Unfortunately, the final proved one match too many for the Asphalt Green Wave squad, who seemed weary from the four-day tournament. Though not an outright victory, the U10 Boys can take great pride in being the second best team in the United States. And they were the only boys team in the tournament to field a female player, Jessie Himel, who played the bulk of every game. The fact that both of the teams in the final play in the CJSL is a testament to the quality of soccer here in New York City. And, while most of the teams in the tournament regularly compete in futsal, Asphalt Green and its rival rarely play this type of indoor soccer. Everyone at Asphalt Green is extremely proud of the success of our U10 Boys and Coach Cyril Charles. This is the first time an Asphalt Green team has made it to the finals of a national championship. Congratulations to the entire team, coaches, and parents!

After school baseball games every Monday on the beautiful Pier 40 courtyard fields (weather permitting), and plenty of baseball instruction at our Pier 40 indoor facility. This is a popular program with limited space so please sign up early. Drop-off at Pier 40 between 3:15 and 4:00 PM. Pick-up from 5:45 - 6:00 PM. Transportation is available from the following schools: PS 3, PS 11, PS 41, PS 89, PS 234, Friends, Corlears, and VCS. Register separately for "Monday After School Transporation." Transportation opportunities may be available from other schools if enough children from a school are registered.

Sports Explorer Program
New York Cares volunteers provide free non-competitive sports activities for children ages 8-13. The activities are geared to engage the children in active play while developing team-building skills. Sports vary throughout the year. Age: Child Saturday:10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Flag Football (September – November)

Our Flag Football league is co–sponsored by the NFL & PAL. This citywide league for children ages 8–14 has been going on for more than ten years.

We are getting ready for the beginning of our flag football season, and I would like for all of you who are interested to get a chance to get your children involved. This flag football league is going on in all 5 boroughs, for children ages 8-11 co-ed and boys ages 12-14. If you’re interested, please get in contact with your borough coordinator ASAP, because spots are limited, teams fill up fast, the program is free and I would love for your child to join us and have fun. We are looking to begin this league sometime between the middle of September and the first week of October, but in order to do so, I’m going to need committed teams in the next couple of days, so coaches will be getting their teams together soon.

The City of New York Parks & Recreation is gearing up for its annual Flag Football League. Our Flag Football league is co-sponsored by the NFL & PAL. This citywide league for children ages 8-14 has been going on for more than ten years. Last year’s league accommodated roughly 27 teams in the 8-11 division and 25 teams in the 12-14 division. A total of 620+ children participated. The Citywide Championships were held at East River Park during the fall.

Launched in September 2004 and supported by the National Hockey League and six NHL Teams, including the New York Rangers, Ace's Got Skills is modeled after the NHL's popular All-Star Super Skills Competition and gives boys and girls ages 11-12 the opportunity to come out and test their skill level in the following key ice hockey categories: fastest skater, most accurate shooter, best puck handler, hardest shot and best goalie. All registration fees collected by the program will benefit the Ace Bailey Children's Foundation.

Come join in the fun at Music for Aardvarks classes - a musical experience

for families with children ages 3 months to 5 years. We will explore music

through song & gesture, dance & movement, rhythm training, and instrument

Kid, and Subway provide children with a positive image of their world and

Rebecca Sokoll

Rebecca is a Brooklyn-based singer, actor and songwriter, and a mother of two magnificent little boys. She is the Assistant Director of Theatre Group Dzieci (www.dziecitheatre.org) an international experimental ensemble with whom she has performed throughout the eastern US and Europe. Her vocals and songwriting are featured on “Radio Picnic”, a CD produced with her husband, singer-songwriter John Norman. In her “spare” time she plugs away at a Psychology degree at Hunter College and plays sing-a-longs and classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Kevin Meeker

Over the last couple of years, singer-songwriter, producer-engineer, and pre-school music teacher, Kevin Meeker, has found a home performing music for New York families. Most days Kevin stays busy teaching various pre-school music classes in and around Brooklyn and Manhattan, including a whole gang load of Music for Aardvarks. However, when nighttime rolls around, he’s usually tucked away in his recording studio, where he continues to forge his own original kids’ music under the name, Opus Ditty & the Hoedown Gang. (http://www.opusditty.com/) Their first album titled “Opus Ditty & the Joyride Jet Engine Bus” incorporates music with clever audio vignettes that take the listener on a journey from city streets, to music class, the park, the Rainforest, the farm, and even into the realm of dreams. Lately, however, the group has been up to something new…stayed tuned for episode one of “The Adventures of Opus Ditty & the Hoedown Gang.”

Karen Kalafatas

Karenis a mom, singer and musical theater professional who has recently morphed into a full-time music teacher and mom. She moved to NYC too many years ago to count and performed ina boatload of regional and Off-Broadway shows before relocating to Boston where she worked as a non-profit fundraiser for organizations like City Year and Harvard University (pronounced Hah-vahd).An official Brooklynite for over a year now, Karen brings to her classes boundless energy, immense joy and her personal philosophy of making all things FUN. She lives in Carroll Gardens with her husband John andtoddling daughter Becca, where they areproud but closeted Red Sox fans.

Dave Foster

Dave Foster is a singer/songwriter living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with his wife and two very musical boys. He has been playing around NYC with his band Bubble since 1995, when they burst onto the l ocal kids music scene with their cover of "Pure Imagination" (from Willy Wonka) off their debut EP.http://www.bubbleland.com/ Since then he and the band has also been performing highly popular Beatles tribute concerts for children, faithfully recreating their most beloved albums live (including a sold out performance of Sgt Pepper @ Symphony Space), creating a whole new generation of Beatle fans. Most recently Dave released his debut solo CD "Blue Circle" and Bubble are also hard at work finishing their next CD of original music.

Rivka Shokrian

Rivka Shokrian is musician, singer and teacher of many years with a passion for educating the young developing mind.

She taught pre-school in Los Angeles for four years and, after moving to New York, taught music classes at various pre-schools in Manhattan.

She is also the mother of a very loving, musical little girl.

Baby Be Safe teaches CPR-First Aid classes for Parents, Schools and Day Cares, Healthcare providers, Businesses and other New York and New Jersey individuals and organizations.

Our CPR-First Aid classes are led by American Red Cross, American Heart Association and EMS Safety certified Instructors in CPR, First Aid and BLS for Healthcare Providers. They can also utilize real-world experience in emergency safety, health care, education and family.

BumbleBee Tennis offers tennis lessons for kids, ages 3 years and up, in New York City. Our indoor loctions are in lower manhattan, near SoHo and the Lower East Side. Our outdoor location is on the Upper West Side, near Columbus Circle. Here is an overview of our programs. Tiny Tennis Program (4-6yrs)
Yes children 3 to 6 years can enjoy playing tennis too. For our 3 and 4 year olds, students are learning the basic ground strokes and volleys while also overall improving their coordination. For kids, 5 and 6 years they are learning how to hit, volley and serve! Throughout the session we progress to having a ralley and playing out a point. More info Mini Aces Tennis Program (7-10 yrs)
Between the ages of seven and ten years old, kids are quickly buildng up motor skills an eye hand coordination. Students can see rapid improvement through Mini Aces' weekly tennis lessons. Kids learn to hit forehands, backhands, volleys and serves. As they progress with each lesson they are introduced to drop shots and even overheads. Throughout the lessons students are playing games and learning to have back and forth ralleys. Jr. Aces Tennis Program (9 yrs to 16 yrs)
The Jr Aces tennis program is perfect for tweens and teens between the ages of 9 and 16 years. Depending on the student's level of tennis experience, we will try to place them in the appropriate class level. Aces Youth Tennis league

This fall City Sports for Kids will have a split session. The Armory will be closed during October for track resurfacing.
Class dates: Sunday, September 7, 14, 21 and November 9, 16, 23
Class time: 2:00-4:30 pm

Spring 2009 starts in March Program Ages and Structure Boys and girls born between 1994 and 2002 are eligible to participate. Spectators may view the program from the balcony. No adults or non-participating children are allowed onto the main track floor. Location New York Road Runners Foundation City Sports for Kids is hosted by The New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory, 168th Street at Fort Washington Avenue, Washington Heights, Manhattan.
By Car: Henry Hudson Parkway to exit 15 to Riverside Drive south; left on 165th Street; one block up hill (parking garage on right); left on Fort Washington Avenue. Street parking generally best on Riverside Drive.
By Subway: A, 1, or 9 to 168th Street; walk one block west to Fort Washington Avenue. New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory—"The World's Fastest Track" The Armory, one of the finest indoor facilities in the country, has been the site of many state, national, and world record-breaking performances. City Sports for Kids uses its 200-meter banked oval track and eight-lane straightaway for running, relays, sprints, and hurdles. Other features of the facility used by the program include sand long-jump pits and a shot-put cage. The Armory is the mecca for high school and college track in the New York City area. Thousands of youth participate in the various invitational and championship meets held on its state-of-the-art track—including the national high school championships. The National Track and Field Hall of Fame at the Armory opened in 2004.
Goals • Promote physical fitness for youth
• Develop self-esteem through success oriented sports
• Build bridges of understanding through play between boys and girls of various races and religions Content • Skill training for youths of all ability levels in the following events: long-distance running, sprints, hurdles, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put, and javelin

Parents are responsible for monitoring children not in the program. No adults or children not in the program are allowed onto the main track floor. Fees $40 per six-class session (non-refundable and non-transferable).
Program size is limited, so register early. There will be no confirmation of your acceptance. New York Road Runners Foundation welcomes all donations to City Sports for Kids.
